Edencraft 565 – Built to Impress – By Andy Sparnon
I’ve been on plenty of boats in my four decades of fishing, but I don’t proclaim myself to be a ‘boating expert’, which in my view has its advantages. You’ll be getting a raw, simplified and honest review of my own experience on the Edencraft 565, which made its way to Manly harbour from the Australian Marine Centre, located in Slacks Creek.
My task was to ride and review a boat that I have dreamt of owning for as long as I can remember. So I jumped at the chance! The crew from AMC were both knowledgeable and welcoming, so we were off to a good start.
I knew that I would be boarding a vessel of high calibre, with a great reputation in the boating scene. But the only way I could confirm it was by jumping in one and getting out on the water.
The Edencraft 565 and 6.0 both rolled into view. Both vessels were imposing and impressive at first glance. Today I would be testing the Edencraft 565. We published a comprehensive review of the Edencraft 6.0 in the March edition of Fish and Boat Magazine.
An ideal situation for boat testing would be rolling waves and even a little slop, but the day gave us reasonably flat conditions, ideal for boaties looking for a comfortable day out on the water. Not ideal for a boat review, but we weren’t planning on holding back when it came to the testing phase!
The boat length sits at 6.01 metres overall and the recommended maximum horsepower is an impressive 225hp. The Edencraft has a dry weight of 900kg and sits at 2.29 metres high on the trailer. There is plenty of deck space too at 5 square metres. So let’s have a look at some of the Edencraft 565 and Easytow trailer features:
The Edencraft 565 includes an Easytow alloy tandem trailer with spare wheel and boat catch. A Stress Free winch with stainless steel anchor completes the picture at the bow. Waterproof quick exchange connectors come as standard with tinned wire, so no more re‑wiring plugs. The trailer also comes with a quality jockey wheel and couplings and Fulton or Alko winches, depending on model selection. The manufacturers use high quality Australian milled Rectangular Hollow Section (R.H.S) and Square Hollow Section (S.H.S) steel which is structurally superior, and an ideal composition for galvanizing compared to imported steel, which can have the tendency of rusting out faster than our Aussie stuff. These feature a double braced frame as standard on 6.5m/3400kgs and above and single RHS up to 6.5/2800kgs.
The trailer has custom axles with calliper mounts which are welded on prior to galvanizing. Galvanised disks are specially prepared prior to assembly to minimise uneven pad wear. Quality tyres are fitted minimising vibration through the trailer. Australian made UV stabilised rollers ensure longevity and the softer polyurethane keel rollers also have galvanised shafts fitted to make launching and retrieving a breeze. All these features enable an easier launch and retrieve even at the most challenging boat ramps. With all the above features, you’ve got a trailer that has been made to stand the test of time and perfectly compliment the complete package.
On board, the Edencraft is fitted with truly impressive Raymarine Axiom Pro 12 RVX with SS175HW 1kw thru-hull transducer and RV100 transducer Mercury vessel view 502 gauge. There is a stainless steel bilge grate, compass, 1100ghp auto bilge pump, plus a dive door with full colour gel sides.
The clarity and view on the fish finder is nothing like I’ve ever seen, and you felt like you’d have an unfair advantage when heading out to chase that trophy fish – just like the ones that feature on the front cover of each edition of this publication.
At a little over six meters in length, the Edencraft 565 offers a spacious and comfortable layout for both fishing and recreational boating. The boat features a deep V-hull design that provides excellent stability and handling in various water conditions. The hull is constructed from high-quality fibreglass, ensuring durability and longevity.
The Mercury 225 XL DTS outboard engine is a powerful and reliable choice for the Edencraft 565. With its Digital Throttle and Shift (DTS) technology, the engine delivers smooth and precise control, making maneuvering the boat effortless. The gutsy 225 provides impressive acceleration and top speed, making it ideal for water sports enthusiasts. On a day like we had, it was a breeze to reach north of 42 knots at just over 5000 RPM. But this beast definitely had more to go, and even though it felt fast, it felt safe.
One of the key advantages of DTS technology is the elimination of mechanical linkages between the throttle control and the engine. Instead of relying on physical connections, the DTS system uses electronic sensors and a digital communication network to relay commands from the throttle control to the engine. This results in incredibly precise and responsive control, with minimal effort required to adjust the engine’s speed and direction.
The DTS system also offers a number of additional features that enhance the overall boating experience. For example, it may include features such as one-touch starting, which simplifies the process of starting the engine, as well as automatic synchronization of multiple engines for smooth and balanced operation.
Furthermore, the DTS technology allows for customizable throttle and shift settings, which can be tailored to the specific preferences and needs of the boater. This may include adjustable throttle sensitivity, shift smoothness, and even the option for multiple control stations, allowing for greater flexibility and convenience.
In addition to these benefits, the DTS system also provides diagnostic capabilities, allowing for easy troubleshooting and maintenance of the engine. The system can monitor various engine parameters in real-time, providing valuable information to the boater and to service technicians when needed.
Overall, the Digital Throttle and Shift technology of the Mercury 225 XL DTS engine offers a significant improvement in control, convenience, and reliability compared to traditional mechanical control systems. It is a key feature that enhances the performance and overall boating experience when paired with the Edencraft 565.
The cockpit of the Edencraft 565 is well-designed with ample seating and storage options. The boat can comfortably accommodate up to 6 passengers, making it a great choice for family outings or fishing trips with friends. The helm station is equipped with modern instrumentation and controls, ensuring the captain has everything needed at their fingertips.
For fishing enthusiasts, the Edencraft 565 offers a range of features to enhance the experience. The boat comes equipped with six rod holders, a live bait tank, and ample storage for tackle and gear. The spacious casting platform at the bow provides plenty of room for anglers to move around and make the perfect catch.
With a fuel capacity of 220 litres, you won’t have any trouble heading offshore to target impressive pelagics or bottom bash for those tasty reef dwellers.
In terms of comfort and convenience, the Edencraft 565 does not disappoint. The boat features a large canopy that provides ample shade on those hot, uncomfortable days, and the seating is upholstered with high-quality, marine-grade materials. The boat also has a built-in freshwater shower and a marine-grade stereo system, adding to the overall enjoyment of the boating experience.
We were able to create some slop as both Edencraft boats travelled at speed, while executing tight turns, and when I say tight, it was full lock! To my astonishment, the 565 glided across the water with zero cavitation! Before that, I was sold, but this just sealed the deal.
The launch/retrieval of the 565 was both stress-free, and an absolute breeze. The boat catch locks in and you’re on your way.
Overall, the Edencraft 565 powered by the Mercury 225 XL DTS is a top-of-the-line boat that offers a winning combination of performance, versatility, and comfort. Whether you’re into fishing, water sports, or simply cruising the waters, this boat is sure to impress. With its powerful engine, spacious layout, and thoughtful design, the Edencraft 565 is a fantastic choice for anyone in the market for a high-quality boat.
